With your young environmentalists, do you have any ideas for Earth Day crafts or exploration?

We’re introducing an amazing Around the World collection this spring, and for our most recent photo shoot, we couldn’t resist creating some cardboard animals from various continents. Your little explorers can also make these simple, recycled Earth Day crafts by using our free printable patterns. Discover tonnes of enjoyable Earth Day activities for kids that use recycled materials by reading on. We love coming up with new ideas for recycling the cardboard boxes your GLTC products arrive in.

EARTH DAY CRAFTS: CARDBOARD ANIMALS

Thick cardboard—best if it comes from a package with corrugated cardboard—
Our free animal templates (click here to grab our freebies for Earth Day)
A pen or pencil

scissors or a specialty blade
Crayons, paints, or felt-tip pens

1. Print1. Print our templates of animals, which include five different options, or sketch your own. Using scissors, cut out the animal shapes (helping your kid strengthen their scissor grip can help with fine motor skills). For the tinier areas, such as the areas surrounding the ears and tails, kids might want adult assistance.

2. Trace the forms of the animals onto the cardboard, then use a craft knife to cut them out (we advise an adult to undertake this part to protect young fingers). The slits on each form should be cut out; doing so will make it easier to construct your animals.

3. Use felt tip pens, paints, or crayons to embellish your animal shapes. We enjoy painting their bodies,, then, after the paint is dry, adding embellishments with a pen. The best advice is to paint the giraffe’s patches using your fingertips!

4. After the shapes for your animals have dried, slot them together to create your creatures. They should fit together properly and stand on their own, as long as you use thick cards. Should yours seem a little unsteady, you might consider using glue to join the forms.

That’s it, and you’ll have a cute collection of animals from all around the world in no time. Your kids can play with your animals anytime they feel like going on a safari by having them displayed on a shelf in their room. We adore that this kid-friendly Earth Day craft creates repurposed mementos that they will enjoy for a long time.

TOILET ROLL BINOCULARS

Kids can build this simple and entertaining Earth Day craft with recycled toilet rolls. Alternatively, try this approach and use washi tape to decorate yours instead of using ribbon and paint, as seen in this how-to guide.

When your children have completed making their binoculars, it’s time to start participating in Earth Day events. Anyone keen for a nature stroll or some bird watching? Make sure to bring along our printable scavenger hunts for your garden or impromptu strolls!

CURIOSITY BOX

Kids can create a sensory curiosity box as an eco-friendly Earth Day craft by upcycling some empty cardboard packaging. Stunt their senses and imagination by putting a variety of interesting objects inside the box. Choose organic objects such as a leaf, a carrot, or a ball of yarn to elicit inquiries about their origins.

TOILET ROLL PUPPETS

These toilet roll animals are a great way to expand your cardboard animal collection. To make your own puppets, print our forest creatures template, cut out the shapes, and adhere them to painted toilet rolls. Another option is to use a shoe box to create a puppet theatre.
