The process of creating resin art involves combining a liquid chemical called epoxy with different colour pigments to produce stunning patterns and textures. Resin art has been around for a while, but it just lately become famous on TikTok, where it has had more than 18 billion views. It is used to fill up moulds to create ornaments, jewellery, coasters, and wooden furniture that can be turned into one-of-a-kind works of art.
Punch Needle Embroidery
Embroidery was popular this year, but punch needle, a more specialised kind of embroidery, is predicted to overtake it in 2023. The type of needle used differs significantly between the two approaches. Working with a larger needle that is held like a pen and punches the thread into the cloth while the needle remains on the surface is what punch needle involves. On TikTok, craftspeople published their works, ranging from rugs and mirror frames to wall art and coasters, and the technique earned approximately 400 million views.
Upholstery
Upholstery is a craft trend we anticipate seeing in 2023 as there is an increasing interest in upcycling. Social media users everywhere have posted videos of themselves transforming used furniture into something incredibly lovely, including us. According to Brittany Jepsen, founder and creative director of The House That Lars Built, “I’ve been collecting all the upholstery books at my local thrift shop because I’m noticing that people are once again DIYing their own curtains, pillows, and cushions.” Additionally, she anticipates that in the coming year, upholstery fabric options will reflect the English cottage style.
Squeegee Painting
Squeegee painting, a simple approach to start working with paint, will dominate the craft industry by 2023. Squeegee painting is a popular fad that requires little to no prior knowledge and is enjoyable for everyone, according to Ashley Poskin, a DIY expert and independent writer for MarthaStewart.com. “The results are amazing, and the process is very zen.” Simply squirt little amounts of variously coloured paint onto a canvas and spread it out with a squeegee to create squeegee art. It’s a craft that adults will enjoy doing and that even kids may attempt.
Disco Ball Art
Disco is back, and it’s entering the realm of art. The trend on TikTok began with makers creating their own disco balls, and it spread from there. According to Poskin, “crafters are using mirror mosaic tile stickers on everything” (we have seen them added to shoes, figurines, mirrors, planters, and more). They are inexpensive and simple to use. The little mirrors in these projects will help your room get some much-needed light during the long, gloomy winter days.
Homemade Clothes
In recent years, making your own garments has gained appeal as an alternative to buying new ones, and Jepsen predicts that trend will continue through 2023. She anticipates that many DIYers will make their own outfits from scratch in addition to upcycling garments from thrift stores. According to Jepsen, “my new favourite Instagram users to follow are sewists who design their own clothing and showcase them. “They are demonstrating that you can truly achieve originality in a world where it’s difficult to be so,” I said.
