We all attempt to recycle more. To be more environmentally conscious, we might go the additional mile and have a recycling bin in our homes, but few people would describe recycling as “fun.”
But shouldn’t there be a way to make it enjoyable? Like converting a trash can into a basketball hoop or a toilet paper tube into a bird feeder?
Here are a few recycled material crafts to get your creative juices flowing!
Recycled Crayon Candles
When making this craft, children should be under adult supervision because it involves hot, melted wax.
Although there are a lot of steps in this project, the process may be enjoyable, and the finished item is both practical and distinctive!
You will need some paper cups and popsicle sticks for preparing the wax and stirring, some crayons, wax, and wicks (which can be found online or in craft stores), and some glass jars/candle holders
First, melt a small amount of wax in the paper cups, and then pour the melted wax into the bottom of your glass jars. Use this wax to attach the wicks to the bottom of each jar and let the wax dry.
Put craft wax in the paper cups for the coloured wax, and then sprinkle some crayon on top of each cup. Unless you intend to blend a new colour, make careful you use only one colour per cup. Four minutes in the microwave, then four minutes of stirring the wax mixture to achieve a uniform consistency.
Bear in mind that this wax is hot. Kids can participate in every aspect, but they need to be closely watched.
The coloured wax should now be added to the glass jars. Different effects, such as an angled effect or a vertical effect, can be produced by holding the jars in various locations. Before adding another colour, let the previous one to dry.
You now possess your candles following the completion of that operation! Scenting oils can be bought online or in craft stores and applied to the melted wax mixture to give them a pleasant perfume. Make a holiday candle that smells like gingerbread or a candle for a tropical destination that smells like coconut as another method to customise your candles.
Glassware Decorated with Recycled Nail Polish
Do you still have any nail polish left over that you don’t intend to use? Or perhaps some dated, uninteresting drinkware for your home? Both? If yes, you should absolutely try this craft.
A paper bowl, nail polish, glasses, and painter’s tape are all you need for this DIY.
Put the nail paint in a dish first. You can make it all one colour or create a marbling appearance by lightly blending many colours together.
Next, place painter’s tape on each glass at the point where you want the nail polish to end. Make sure you obtain a strong coat of nail polish on the glasses before letting them dry.
Once everything has dry, remove the tape, and you have brand-new, one-of-a-kind glasses!
Turn Mason Jars Into Candle Holders
Try repurposing leftover pasta sauce jars as a decorative item rather than throwing them away! You can use this incredibly simple craft to show off the previously stated crayon candles. You’ll need mason jars, some stencil stickers, and acrylic paint for this craft.
Place the sticker on the jar first. This will be the only area of the jar that is still transparent. Next, paint the entire jar and allow it to dry. Continue doing this until you are satisfied with the paint job. Remove the sticker after it has dried. A “window” will be left in the paint as a result, which is ideal for holding a candle.
The candle should be placed on some pebbles or sand in the bottom of the jar before being displayed.
These are just a few suggestions for inventively using your recycled trash. Children of all ages will enjoy participating in these enjoyable Earth Day activities! Always be inventive and look for methods to make recycling more enjoyable!
