Earth Day, observed on March 11, is a day to honour and save the planet that we all call home. And even though you can lecture your children until you’re blue in the face about global warming and not littering, there are a few easy changes you can make to make these teachings much more enjoyable.
Try these crafts and activities to teach your kids about the value of recycling, planting trees, and protecting the environment, and to get them enthusiastic about Earth Day.
1. Take Care Of A Tree

One of the most popular Earth Day activities is planting trees, and Chickabug’s free printable tree-planting kit makes it even more enjoyable. It includes planting instructions, an official “tree caretaker” commitment, a tag that youngsters can tie to the tree to prove they planted it, and more. The tree is all that needs to be added!
2. Create A Collage

Who doesn’t have a mountain of outdated magazines stashed away? Have your kids chop them up to make this Earth Day collage instead of throwing them away and causing more trash on the earth.
3. Create Your Own Tote

Your kids may contribute to reducing the amount of plastic bags that end up in the environment each year by making their own totes! Over 500 billion grocery store plastic bags are used on Earth each year. Designed for non-sewers, these instructables instructions are as simple as they get.
4. Upcycle The Earth

When you can upcycle, giving old items interesting new uses, why recycle? We also believe that repurposing the Earth itself is the ultimate way to honour the planet on Earth Day. Consider how much more attention an old spinning globe will receive if it is transformed into an upcycled globe lamp if it is now collecting dust.
5. Plant a Toilet Paper Tube Garden

Encourage your children to create a toilet paper tube garden as a way to combine two Earth Day principles: recycling and plant cultivation. Reusing those tubes reduces the amount of waste in the environment, and when the bottom is folded in, they create the ideal starter home for seedlings.
6. Recycle Paper

How awesome would it be to actually create recycled paper yourself for Earth Day instead of just throwing your kids’ old computer printouts in the recycling bin? It’s actually much simpler than you might imagine, and you probably already have most of the necessary equipment in your home. Additionally, it will provide your children with a fresh, practical perspective on recycling.
7. Build Litterbugs

This recycling garbage into “litterbugs” activity from We Are Teachers serves two purposes. To help your kids remember the lesson, you not only reinforce the negative effects of trash, but you also design adorable creatures.
8. Make A Lorax

You are aware that this little orange man is the environmentalist’s poster child if you have read Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax. In honour of Earth Day, why not read this book and make this adorable project with recycled toilet paper tubes?
9. Build An Energy Bike

If you have an old exercise cycle sitting in your basement and you want to demonstrate to your kids how much electricity is needed, say, to run their Sony PlayStation, you can make it into an energy bike that will send them into an Earth Day frenzy! It’s not as difficult as you would think—all you need is an amp metre and a few other inexpensive pieces from the hardware shop.
10. Draw Up an Earth Day Bucket List

Even the smallest actions, like turning off the water when brushing their teeth or cleaning up a piece of trash they see outdoors, may help kids commemorate Earth Day. Consider creating your own Earth Day bucket list or printing out this fantastic sample to-list from Chickabug, which includes items like turning off the lights when you leave the room or donating old clothes to a charity, to demonstrate to youngsters all the simple ways they can help conserve the environment.
